Lumberjacks Phase I draft recap

MUSKEGON, MI- The Muskegon Lumberjacks followed a blockbuster trade by making ten Phase I draft picks Monday night. The draft consisted of only 2001-birthyears, and the Jacks led things off by selecting forward John Farinacci with the 12th overall pick.

“John is a great player,” said GM John Vanbiesbrouck. “He’s got a wonderful skillset and competes hard. He will contribute a lot to this organization.”

Farinacci is a Chatham, NJ native and Harvard commit. He played last season at Shattuck St. Mary’s and scored 28 goals and 63 points in 58 games.

In the second round, the Jacks took another forward in Ryan Robinson. Hailing from Plano, TX, Robinson played with Jacks affiliate lister Owen Farris in the Dallas Stars U16 program. Robinson tallied ten goals and 26 points in 32 games last season.

In the third round, Vanbiesbrouck, who put an emphasis on forwards in this draft, selected another one with the 44th overall pick. Jeff Burridge became the third forward and the first import taken by Muskegon in the 2017 Phase I draft.

Burridge, a Canadian from London, ON, suited up for the London Jr. Knights last season, scoring 18 goals and 35 points in 31 games.

In the fourth round, the Jacks took their first defenseman: Cam McDonald from Eagle River, Alaska. The 49th overall pick (1st in the fourth round acquired from CR) played 25 games last season for Eagle River HS, scoring 27 points.

In the fifth round, another d-man came off the board, as Vanbiesbrouck selected Detroit native Evan Orr with the 76th pick. A Michigan Tech commit, Orr scored nine points last season playing for Little Caesars.

Here’s how the rest of the draft played out for Vanbiesbrouck and the Jacks:

6th/92nd: F Lukas Svejkovsky (Point Roberts, WA) Played last year for Delta Hockey academy. Played 22 games, scoring 17 goals and 44 points. Drafted in the WHL draft in the 2nd round

7th/108th: D Brendan Kischnick (Troy, MI) Played last year for the Oakland Jr. Grizzlies U16. Scored 1-11-12 in 31 games. Drafted by Erie in the 6th round of the OHL draft.

8th/124th: F Alex Trombley (Howell, MI) Played for Belle Tire U16 last year. 21g games played, 0-8-8. Committed to Ohio State.

10th/153rd: D Hunter Skinner (Pinckney, MI) Played lastyear for Belle Tire U15 last year, scored 1-3-5 in 16 games.

10th/156th: Egor Afanasyev (Tver, Russia) Played last season for Little Caesar’s U16, scored five goals and eight points.

The draft resumes with Phase II tomorrow. The action begins at 9:00am and the Jacks twitter will have every pick the Jacks make live.
