MUSKEGON, MI- The Muskegon Lumberjacks rounded out their 45-man roster today by making 22 selections in the USHL Phase II draft. Open to all players not protected by a USHL team, approximately 300 players were drafted in total.

The Jacks traded their first-round (12th overall) selection in a monumental trade on Monday, so made their first choice of the day in the second round. With the 28th overall pick, GM John Vanbiesbrouck selected 1997-birthyear Donovan Ott, a 6-foot-1, 201-pound forward who scored 57 points last season playing in Johnstown (NAHL).

“Excellent winger with great hockey IQ,” Vanbiesbrouck said about Ott. “He is going to be a great addition on the right side for us. His biggest strength is his ability to score the puck.”

Muskegon focused heavily on forwards, taking 19 of them in total on the day. After Ott, forwards Brandon Kruse (4th round), Corey Clifton (5th), and Zach Faremouth (6th) rounded out the Jacks’ top four picks.

The first defenseman taken by Vanbiesbrouck was Nash Nienhaus, the Jacks’ 8th-round selection.

Muskegon only selected one goaltender, but it was a very notable one: former Team USA goaltender Dylan St. Cyr was taken by the Jacks in the 17th round. St Cyr is a Notre Dame commit.

Of the Jacks’ 22 picks, 16 are American-born, one has dual American-Canadian citizenship (Nienhaus), three are Canadian, one is Swedish and one is Russian.

“The Muskegon Lumberjacks got a lot better in the last two days,” said assistant coach Todd Robinson. “We’re very excited for the future and seeing what unfolds in camp over Memorial Day weekend.”
