MUSKEGON, MI- The Muskegon outshot the Tri-City Storm for the second straight night, but Tri-City outscored Muskegon 4-2 to sweep the Lumberjacks.
The final shot total favored the Lumberjacks 35-26, but Tri-City goaltender Filip Larsson was again outstanding, stopping 33 of those tries.
Keegan Karki made his Lumberjacks debut in net, taking the loss to fall to 0-1-0. The former Team USA goaltender made 22 saves and was solid overall despite the loss.
Anthony Del Gaizo and the top line continued their dominant play, and Del Gaizo scored for the fifth time this season on a breakaway. Matej Pekar notched the primary assist, his sixth helper of the season. Both Del Gaizo’s goal total and Pekar’s assist total are team-bests.
Del Gaizo’s goal gave the Jacks a 1-0 first-period lead, but Tri-City scored three unanswered in the next two periods to make it 3-1 midway through the third.
On a 5-on-3 power play, Clayton Phillips notched his third goal of the season when he gunned a wrist shot bar down to draw within one. The Jacks scored twice this weekend against the USHL’s top penalty kill that had conceded only one goal all season.
Tri-City extended their lead when Hugo Blixt scored for a second consecutive night with less than a minute to play, wrapping up the scoring with 49 seconds to play and making the score 4-2.
Muskegon next faces Central Illinois on Wednesday morning at 10:30am for their annual education day game. Next weekend, the Youngstown Phantoms visit LC Walker Arena for a pair on Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday’s game is the Jacks’ annual military night, and Muskegon will wear special jerseys to be auctioned off postgame. The Lumberjacks are seeking sponsors that want to donate tickets to veterans. Call 231-724-5225 for information.
