MUSKEGON, MI- The Muskegon Lumberjacks got two goals from captain Anthony Del Gaizo, lifting them to their eighth-straight win over the Central Illinois Flying Aces, 4-2.
Following a five-game losing streak, Muskegon has now won two of three, and has moved up to eighth place in the Eastern Conference.
Wyatt Bongiovanni and Vincent de Mey each recorded a goal and an assist, and Bongiovanni now has scored seven goals and 12 points in his last nine games.
The two combined to score the game-winner in the second, when de Mey stripped an Ace of the puck in the neutral zone. Bongiovanni rushed up with de Mey, leading to a 2-on-0. de Mey came in over the blue line and connected with Bongiovanni in the slot, who roofed a wrist shot over the blocker of Central Illinois netminder Zach Stejskal.
That put the Jacks up 3-1 with 5:54 remaining in the second, and would go down as the eventual game-winner.
Keegan Karki made his third-straight start in net, earning his second win in three games. Karki made 25 saves to improve to 2-4-0.
Del Gaizo led the scoring off in the first when Jachym Kondelik found him open on the back door. Del Gaizo one-timed the puck past Stejskal to give the Jacks a 1-0 lead less than five minutes in.
After Bongiovanni and de Mey’s goals that lifted the Jacks to a 3-1 advantage, Central Illinois got a goal from Jakub Lacka to make it a 3-2 game with 6:50 remaining in the third.
Del Gaizo and the Lumberjacks weren’t done yet, and the captain’s second of the net sealed the game with 4:10 remaining. Matej Pekar picked up the primary assist on the play, waiting patiently for Del Gaizo to open up on the back door before feeding him a deft pass between two defenders. Pekar continues to lead the team in points, and picked up his 16th tonight.
The Lumberjacks travel to Green Bay next weekend, but return home December 15th and 16th, hosting the Chicago Steel. December 16th is Teddy Bear Toss night, and the Lumberjacks are aiming to break the USHL record for most bears tossed on the ice. Buy tickets online, or by calling 231-726-2400.
