MUSKEGON, MI- Madison Capitols goaltender Dryden McKay tied his own USHL season high with 55 saves, carrying his team past the Muskegon Lumberjacks to a 5-3 win Friday at LC Walker Arena.
Muskegon’s 58 shots are a USHL-high for this season.
The Jacks grabbed the lone goal of the first period when defenseman Marc Del Gaizo snuck in down low and gunned a feed from Jachym Kondelik past McKay to give Muskegon the 1-0 lead.
The second period was a back-and-forth affair, with the teams exchanging goals. First, Madison tied it on Alec Broetzman’s 16th of the season, but 2:19 later Anthony Del Gaizo regained the lead for the Lumberjacks with his 28th of the year. Del Gaizo has now scored in five straight home games.
Madison tied the game at two when Kamil Sadlocha forced a turnover at the Madison blue line and scored on a breakaway.
1:07 after Sadlocha’s goal, former Capitol Vincent de Mey gave Muskegon the 3-2 lead, jamming a rebound home following an Anthony Del Gaizo shot. With 1:40 left in the second, the Jacks were back in front.
Del Gaizo’s assist gives him 45 points on the season, tied for the league lead.
The Jacks hadn’t lost in regulation when leading after two periods, but that changed Friday. Madison scored three unanswered goals and got 20 saves from McKay in the third, lifting the Caps to a 5-3 victory.
Broetzman netted the game-winner with 4:36 to play and Verners Egle added an insurance tally with just 3:11 on the clock.
Zach Borgiel was in net for Muskegon and stopped 23 of 28 shots, dropping to 2-1-0.
The Jacks and Caps will rematch tomorrow night, a 7:15pm puck drop at LC Walker Arena. The first 500 fans through the door will get a pack of Lumberjacks trading cards, and the team will be available for autographs after the game.
