Lumberjacks winning streak comes to end against Phantoms

Lumberjacks drop first game since October 5

MUSKEGON, MI - The Muskegon Lumberjacks' USHL-best seven-game winning streak came to a halt on Saturday with a 4-3 overtime loss against Youngstown Phantoms at L.C. Walker Arena.

The Lumberjacks (7-4-1, 15 points), are now 0-3 against the Phantoms (6-4-2) this season.

Phantoms 4 - Lumberjacks 3 (OT)

The Lumberjacks opened the scoring with a Luke Mobley goal at the 17:15 mark in the first.

Mobley wristed a shot in the slot past Phantoms goaltender Dominic Basse for his fifth goal of the season. The goal was Mobley’s third against Youngstown this season.

Entering the second with a 1-0 lead, Youngstown scored three unanswered goals in the middle frame.

A pair of Yusako Ando goals and a Jake Suede tally put the Phantoms up 3-1 after two periods.

Ando beat Lumberjacks goaltender Noah Giesbrecht high for his first goal at the 7:55 mark in the second.

Ando gave the Phantoms the lead a few minutes later on a power-play goal, to give Youngstown a 2-1 lead.

Ando has three goals against Muskegon this season.

The Phantoms doubled their lead at the 14:12 mark in the second on Suede’s first goal of the season.

In the third, the Lumberjacks registered their second goal on Cam Knuble’s first tally of the year with 13:54 left in the frame.

The third-year Lumberjack collected a rebound off a shot that deflected into the slot and popped a wrister past Basse’s blocker to cut the lead to 3-2 Phantoms.

Down by one, Lumberjacks Head Coach Mike Hamilton pulled Giesbrecht in favor of an extra attacker with under two minutes remaining in the game.

Tanner Edwards off a deflected pass collected in front, burying his sixth goal of the season with 1:25 left in the final frame.

In overtime, the Phantoms scored the game-winning goal on a two-on-one odd-man rush with Josh Deluca centering a pass to Jayson Dobay, beating Giesbrecht on the back-door to secure the win for Youngstown.

The Lumberjacks continue their five-game homestand against the Green Bay Gamblers next Friday, November 8 at 7:05 PM at L.C Walker Arena.

The game is Military Night presented by Little River Casino Resort. Next Friday’s game also features a specialty jersey LIVE auction after the game. The jerseys are sponsored by L3 Harris.

The series against the Gamblers runs through November 9. The homestand ends against the Des Moines Buccaneers on November 16.
