MUSKEGON, MI- Lumberjack forward John Farinacci has been selected to the 29-man preliminary roster for the 2021 U.S. National Junior Team. The group will compete for 25 roster spots during a week-long camp held from December 6-13 at USA Hockey Arena.
Farinacci, a third-round NHL Draft pick in 2019 (Arizona), has compiled six points in the Jacks’ first four games in 2020-21. John has scored at least one point in each of Muskegon’s four games, and is coming off a two-goal game against Team USA.
Former Jacks GM John Vanbiesbrouck is now with USA Hockey, and as the Assistant Executive Director of Hockey Operations, is tasked with putting together the teams that represent the US in international play.
“Johnny has proven to be a good two-way forward and has a very mature game,” said Vanbiesbrouck. “He is very willing to do what it takes to win.”
It’s not surprising to hear this praise coming from the USA Hockey Hall of Famer- Vanbiesbrouck drafted Farinacci in the first round of the 2017 USHL Draft. Since then, Farinacci has gone on to be drafted in the NHL and score 22 points as a true freshman at Harvard University.
Now in Muskegon for his first full USHL season, Farinacci is on everyone’s radar as one of the league’s most exciting players. He (2019) and teammate Danil Gushchin (2020) were both selected 76th overall in the NHL Draft, making them the third-highest drafted players in the USHL this season.
“Making this team was a pretty big goal of mine going into the summer,” said Farinacci. “But then, because of COVID, we weren’t even sure if the tournament would happen at all. To get this chance is very important to me, so I’m thrilled that it’s scheduled to happen. There are still a couple more cuts to go, but I’m going to put my best foot forward and hope to be playing for Team USA in a few weeks.”
The tournament will be held in Edmonton, Alberta, and runs from December 25, 2020, until January 5, 2021.
Farinacci and the Jacks head to Youngstown this weekend for a pair of games against the Phantoms on Friday and Saturday. Both games will air on HockeyTV.com.
