MUSKEGON, MI- The Muskegon Lumberjacks have announced the signing of Head Coach Mike Hamilton to a four-year contract extension. The signing comes just one day after Hamilton became the winningest head coach in Lumberjacks franchise history. Hamilton's 93rd win, a 7-4 victory over Team USA, pushed his win total past Todd Krygier's previous record of 92.
“We’re proud to announce that we’ve signed Coach Hamilton to a four-year contract extension,” said President of Hockey Operations Steve Lowe. “This move gives the Lumberjacks stability on the coaching side. We feel this is important as we continue to develop players and improve our organization.”
“Mike has been one of the hardest-working coaches I’ve ever worked with,” continued Lowe. “He is very deserving and I couldn't be happier for Jacks fans, players, future players, and especially for Mike Hamilton.”
Hamilton has been involved with the Jacks organization since 2014 when his son, Trevor, played for the Jacks. Hamilton was hired as the team’s video coach during the 2017-18 season before being hired as the head coach ahead of the 2018-19 season. The four-year extension makes Hamilton the longest-tenured coach in Lumberjacks history.
“For everyone involved, it gives us a clear direction moving forward,” said Hamilton. “When I came here, the owners gave me an opportunity, and it’s pretty rewarding to be given an opportunity and have success follow.”
“It’s truly one of those honors that belongs to not just me but my whole staff. Coach Nelson has been with me since day one, he’s been a huge part of our team's success and we have an organization, led by Steve Lowe, that finds us phenomenal players. I can’t say enough about our owners, Dan Israel and Bob Kaiser, and how they’ve made this a first-class organization that gives us everything we need to win. It’s a great honor and I’m very proud to be a part of this organization for another four years.”
Owner Bob Kaiser has known Hamilton for many years, and knows that he can bring a Clark Cup to Muskegon.
“I’ve known Mike a long time,” said Kaiser. “He’s won national and state championships, and has developed many NCAA division one and NHL players. We brought him here for that reason- to bring that same winning attitude and development here to Muskegon. This long-term contract shows our belief that he can bring a Clark Cup to Muskegon, and we have the utmost confidence in him.”
“He ensures we will achieve our goal- to make the Muskegon Lumberjacks the best junior hockey organization in the world.”
The announcement of Hamilton's contract extension comes as the Muskegon Lumberjacks prepare to finish their regular-season home schedule this weekend April 8-10 against Dubuque.
The Jacks then go on the road to try and maintain home ice advantage in the Clark Cup playoffs.
