Lumberjacks Draw Within One Point Of Home Ice With 6-5 win Over Dubuque

By Scott Bradford, 04/23/21, 12:30AM EDT

DUBUQUE, IA- The Muskegon Lumberjacks downed the Dubuque Fighting Saints 6-5 in overtime Thursday, drawing within one point of clinching home-ice advantage in the first round of the Clark Cup Playoffs.

Dubuque claimed a 4-1 lead in the second period, but Muskegon fought back to tie the game and take the 5-4 lead in the third.

The Saints forced overtime, but Muskegon’s Jacob Guevin scored the OT winner, lifting the Jacks to the victory.

Lumberjack forward Tanner Kelly scored twice in the win, leading Muskegon to the victory on the road.

Muskegon kicked off the scoring just 1:15 into the game when Cristophe Tellier tallied his 22nd of the year. However, Dubuque would claim control of the game with four answered goals to take a 4-1 lead with five to play in the second.

Muskegon starter Nate Reid was lifted from the game early on, and Jan Skorpik took over in net from there, stopping 24 of 27 shots in the win. Skorpik has now won seven of his last nine starts.

From there, Muskegon battled back, getting goals from Philip Tresca and Kelly to cut the deficit to 4-3 heading into the third.

In the third, Muskegon continued to push, taking the 5-4 lead on goals from Kelly and Kyle Aucoin.

Dubuque’s PJ Fletcher tied the game at the midway point of the third, but Guevin won it in the extra period for the Jacks.

Muskegon now heads to Chicago for a two-game set against the Steel. First-place Chicago has already clinched the Anderson Cup, awarded to the team in the USHL that has earned the most points in the regular season.

Should Muskegon earn one more point this weekend, they would clinch home ice in the first round of the Clark Cup Playoffs. Muskegon also clinches if Green Bay were to lose either of their games in any fashion this weekend.
