MIDDLETON, Wisc. — Ten different goal scorers gave Muskegon’s first double-digit win of the season as the Muskegon Lumberjacks pulverized the Madison Capitols by a final score of 10-to-6 on Friday, Jan. 7 from Bob Suter’s Capitol Ice Arena in downtown Middleton, Wisconsin. Scoring the ten goals for the Lumberjacks were Phil Tresca, Ben Strinden, Jack Williams, Quinn Hutson, Tyler Hotson, Joey Larson, David Hymovitch, Jake Richard, Jake Braccini, and Noah Ellis.
It did not take long for Madison to draw first blood as former Lumberjack Michael Quinn blasted a slap shot past Muskegon netminder Platon Zadorozhnyy at 1:41 of the opening period. Quinn’s third goal of the season was assisted by Barret Brooks to give Madison the 1-to-0 lead.
About two minutes later, the Lumberjacks respond with alternate captain Phil Tresca firing a wrist shot past Madison goalie Marino Ramirez to even the score 1-to-1. Tresca’s 15th lamplighter of the season was assisted by Jake Richard at 3:21 of the first period.
Near the midway mark in the first, Muskegon’s alternate captain Ben Strinden broke through on a breakaway and tucked a nifty goal to put the Lumberjacks in front at 9:10 of the period. Strinden’s 14th goal of the season was unassisted to give Muskegon a 2-to-1 lead.
In the waning minutes of the first period, captain Jack Williams unloaded a clapper from the point on the power play to give Muskegon a 3-to-1 lead at 19:03. Williams’s fifth goal of the season was assisted by Noah Ellis and Ben Strinden.
Through 20 minutes of action, the Lumberjacks controlled a 3-to-1 lead over the Madison Capitols.
Just 21 seconds into the middle frame, Muskegon would strike again on the power play, this time from Quinn Hutson to give the Lumberjacks a three-goal lead. Hutson’s 15th goal of the season was helped by Phil Tresca and Jack Williams to make it a 4-to-1 score.
Under two minutes later, Tyler Hotson would pile on for the Lumberjacks, scoring his fifth goal of the season at 2:08 of the second period. Parker Lindauer and Jacob Napier would add assists as Muskegon opened it up to a 5-to-1 lead.
Madison would stop the bleeding at 8:02 of the second period with a sneaky goal from Matthew McGroarty to put the Capitols within three goals. McGroarty’s fifth goal of the season was assisted by Jake Dunlap to make it a 5-to-2 score, still in favor of the Lumberjacks.
The Lumberjacks would regain the four-goal lead with Joey Larson notching his 17th goal of the season at 10:33 of the second period. Quinn Hutson scored the lone assist on Larson’s goal to give Muskegon a 6-to-2 advantage in the middle stanza.
The Capitols answered at 11:52 of the second period with a goal from Tyler Haskins to make it a 6-to-3 game. Nick Wallace got the only helper on Haskins’s sixth goal of the season.
Twenty-two seconds later, Muskegon would push the lead back up to four goals with a tally by David Hymovitch at 12:14 of the period. Hymovitch’s goal was unassisted, making the score 7-to-3 with the Lumberjacks in front.
The see-saw battle continued with Madison popping in a shorthanded goal from Jake Dunlap at 15:05 of the second period to put the Capitols within three goals again. Dunlap’s 12th goal of the season was assisted by Ben Dexheimer to make it a 7-to-4 score.
While on the power play, Jake Richard powered home his sixth goal of the season to restore the four-goal lead for Muskegon at 16:41 of the second period. Richard’s power play goal was assisted by Joey Larson and Jacob Guevin, giving the Lumberjacks an 8-to-4 lead.
Madison’s Ben Dexheimer would score the ninth goal of the period, with his rocket from the blue line at 18:45 of the second period. Dexheimer’s fourth goal of the season was assisted by Nick DeSantis and Luke Mittlestadt to make it an 8-to-5 score, with the Lumberjacks still in the lead.
After a nine-goal second period, 40 minutes of action, the Lumberjacks took an 8-to-5 lead heading into the dressing room for the second intermission.
With Madison on the power play, Luke Mittlestadt sniped a wrist shot upstairs five minutes into the final frame of regulation. Mittlestadt’s ninth goal of the season was assisted by Tyler Haskins and pushed the Capitol deficit to two goals, with Muskegon leading 8-to-6.
The three-goal lead for Muskegon was restored once again, courtesy of Muskegon’s Jake Braccini netting his 13th goal of the season at 8:53 of the third period. Braccini’s goal was assisted by Tyler Hotson and Parker Lindauer to increase the score to 9-to-6 in favor of Muskegon.
At 11:31 of the third period, the Lumberjacks would add one more goal to enter double digits for the first time this season after a Noah Ellis rip from the deep slot. Quinn Hutson would add the only assist on Ellis’s second goal of the season to increase the score to 10-to-6 for Muskegon.
In the end, the Lumberjacks hit the double-digit mark on the scoreboard for the first time this season, and Muskegon asserted their dominance over the Madison Capitols by a final score of 10-to-6.
