The Muskegon Lumberjacks Charitable Foundation is in its ninth year of sponsoring the Reading Caravan. The Reading Caravan is an incentive-based program designed to motivate K-6 students in the Muskegon Area with prizes, player visits, and arena events.
Every student in the program has a reading goal set by their teacher three times throughout the school year. At the end of each period, the teacher reports to the Muskegon Lumberjacks Charitable Foundation and the foundation provides the student with a prize he/she has met the goal. Prizes in the past included tickets to a Lumberjacks game, water bottles, books, t-shirts, and free coupons from area businesses.
Each school is also scheduled for two visits by players during the school year. Players read to the students, do educational/learning activities, answer questions and speak on sportsmanship and being successful. There is a strong emphasis on setting goals and being the best you can.
To celebrate as an entire program, the Muskegon Lumberjacks host a Education Day Game every year inviting these participating schools to join!
“We want our players to feel like a part of the Muskegon Community. They live with local families, attend local schools, and give back to the people of Muskegon through the reading caravan. We feel we are providing a great service to the students in the area promoting literacy. It also helps our players build a sense of caring and understanding service to others.” - Mike Hamilton & Josh Nelson, Coaches 2018-19 Muskegon Lumberjacks
“As a player we are looked up to by the students that watch us play. Parents and their children come to games to support us on the ice. It is only right that hockey players living and playing hockey in the Muskegon Area give back to the community. The Reading Caravan is one way we can do that. It is very rewarding as we go into schools and see the student’s reaction and see the progress they make.” - Colby Bukes, Captain 2018-19 Muskegon Lumberjacks
